Introduction
As the world moves toward renewable energy, biodiesel has become an important alternative to fossil fuels. Biodiesel can be produced from various sources such as vegetable oils, used cooking oil, and animal fats. In Bangladesh, a significant amount of animal fat from slaughterhouses and food industries goes unused every day. This waste can actually be converted into valuable biodiesel fuel.
This article explains how biodiesel can be produced from animal fat, the raw materials required, production methods, and the business potential in Bangladesh.
What is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from natural oils or fats through a chemical process called transesterification. It can be used in diesel engines either as a pure fuel (B100) or mixed with petroleum diesel (such as B20).
Unlike conventional diesel, biodiesel is:
Biodegradable
Less polluting
Renewable
Produced from waste resources
Because of these advantages, many countries are increasingly adopting biodiesel as part of their energy strategy.
Why Animal Fat is a Good Source for Biodiesel
Animal fat, also known as tallow, is produced during meat processing in slaughterhouses. In Bangladesh, large amounts of animal fat are generated daily from:
Cattle slaughterhouses
Poultry processing plants
Fish processing industries
Food industry waste
Instead of being discarded or underutilized, this fat can be converted into biodiesel fuel.
Among animal fats, the most common sources include:
Beef Tallow – Most available and widely used
Chicken Fat – Common in poultry processing plants
Fish Oil – Available in coastal processing industries
Beef tallow is generally considered the best option because it produces high-quality biodiesel with a good cetane number.
How Biodiesel is Produced from Animal Fat
The biodiesel production process involves several steps.
1. Fat Preparation
Animal fat must first be melted and filtered to remove impurities such as meat particles, dirt, and water.
2. Methoxide Preparation
Methanol is mixed with a catalyst such as Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) or Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) to create a solution known as methoxide.
3. Transesterification Reaction
The methoxide is mixed with heated animal fat at about 55–60°C. This reaction converts the fat molecules into biodiesel and glycerin.
4. Separation
After several hours of settling:
Biodiesel forms the upper layer
Glycerin settles at the bottom
The glycerin is drained out as a by-product.
5. Washing and Drying
The biodiesel is washed with water to remove remaining chemicals and soap. Then it is gently heated to remove any remaining moisture.
After this step, the biodiesel is ready for use.
Raw Materials Needed for a Small Biodiesel Plant
For a small biodiesel plant producing about 500 liters per day, the approximate raw material requirement is:
Animal fat: ~500 kg per day
Methanol: ~100 liters per day
Catalyst (NaOH or KOH): ~2–3 kg per day
These materials are relatively easy to obtain in Bangladesh.
Where to Find Raw Materials in Bangladesh
Several industries generate suitable raw materials for biodiesel production:
Slaughterhouses
Major cities such as Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, and Rajshahi produce large amounts of animal fat daily.
Poultry Processing Plants
Companies like Kazi Farms, CP Bangladesh, and Paragon Poultry produce chicken fat as a by-product.
Fish Processing Industry
Coastal areas such as Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar generate fish oil waste.
Restaurants and Hotels
Used cooking oil from restaurants can also be converted into biodiesel.
Estimated Cost of a Small Biodiesel Plant
A small biodiesel plant with a production capacity of around 500 liters per day may require an investment of approximately:
Machinery: 12–30 lakh BDT
Import, installation, and setup: 5–10 lakh BDT
Factory shed and infrastructure: 5–15 lakh BDT
Storage tanks and piping: 3–8 lakh BDT
Licenses and documentation: 1–3 lakh BDT
The total initial investment may range between 30 to 70 lakh BDT depending on equipment and setup.
Production Cost and Profit Potential
The estimated production cost of biodiesel in Bangladesh is roughly 90–95 BDT per liter, depending mainly on raw material costs.
If the market price of diesel is around 109 BDT per liter, the profit margin could be approximately 15–20 BDT per liter.
For a 500-liter-per-day plant, this could generate a monthly profit of around 2–3 lakh BDT.
Challenges in Bangladesh
Although biodiesel has strong potential, several challenges remain:
Lack of organized raw material collection
Limited government policy on biodiesel blending
Limited awareness about renewable fuels
However, as global energy demand grows and environmental concerns increase, biodiesel could become an important energy sector in Bangladesh.
Conclusion
Producing biodiesel from animal fat offers a promising opportunity for Bangladesh. It converts waste into valuable fuel, reduces environmental pollution, and creates new business opportunities.
With proper raw material collection systems, supportive policies, and investment in small production plants, biodiesel could play an important role in the country’s renewable energy future.
For entrepreneurs interested in renewable energy businesses, biodiesel production from animal fat may become a highly profitable and sustainable venture in the coming years.
